Teacher to review the following Vocab prior to the reading of The Potential of Change Pg 111-117 of The Marrow Thieves - copy of novel on my desk.

Vocab: Chapter 13: The Potential Of Change

  1. Rickety: The term "rickety" refers to something that is unstable, weak, or in poor condition. 

  2. Precambrian: a geological period that represents the vast span of time in Earth's history before the appearance of complex life forms. In the novel, the term may be used in reference to ancient times or as a metaphor for a distant, forgotten past.

  3. Wiindigo: The term "Wiindigo" (also spelled "Wendigo") originates from Algonquian folklore and refers to a malevolent spirit or monster. In various Indigenous mythologies, the Wiindigo is often depicted as a cannibalistic creature associated with hunger, winter, and spiritual corruption. 

Vocab: Chapter 14 The Other Indians Pg 118

  1. Blatant: refers to something that is obvious, conspicuous, or lacking any attempt at concealment. It describes behavior or actions that are brazen, often with a negative connotation.

  2. Deranged: describes someone who is mentally disturbed, irrational, or behaving in a disturbed or abnormal manner. 

  3. Tabernacle: can have different meanings depending on the context. In a religious context, it refers to a sacred place or a small container used to house the Eucharist in Catholic or Orthodox Christian churches. In a general sense, it can refer to a place of worship or a temporary shelter or dwelling.

  4. Vigilant: Implies a state of being vigilant or on guard.

  5. Cerulean: A colour term that describes a deep blue color, resembling the color of the sky on a clear day.

  6. Nokomis: In Ojibwe culture, "Nokomis" means "grandmother." It is a term used to refer to a grandmother or an older female relative, often conveying respect and love.

  7. Venison: is the meat of a deer, typically obtained by hunting.

  8. Altruistic: describes someone who selflessly cares for or acts in the best interest of others, often without expecting anything in return. 

  9. Smirk: 


    A smirk is a facial expression characterized by a slight, self-satisfied or smug smile. It typically involves lifting one corner of the mouth while keeping the other corner relatively neutral or slightly downturned.
  10. Privy: "Privy" has a few meanings. Most likely refers to an outdoor toilet or an outhouse OR the term "privy" can also be used more broadly to refer to any private or exclusive space or knowledge.

Task: Teacher to read Chapter 12 The Potential Of Change & Chapter 13 - The Other Indians Pg 118 out loud to the class.
